Today we learned how important the role of communication is for all people. Most people think of communication as basic stuff that everyone can do. We do not think of what a privilege it is to be able to communicate with others without difficulty. It is an awesome privilege.
Some people with communication disabilities and/or disorders have immense challenges to communicate even the simpliest thing to others. With modern technology, this is made easier, but these people still have more of a challenge than people without any challenges in communication.
When Barbara asked the class what was needed to communicate (fairly simple question, you would think) we had a lot of difficulty coming up with the answer. I believe that was because we, for the most part, are not challenged with our communicating skills. The answer, by the way, is:
o people - communicator, communication partner
o joint attention
o common language
