Assignment 2: Finding Apps for the IPod Touch

This assignment was fun! We have to profile a student, and then find some apps for the IPod Touch that he would use, and justify our choices.

My student's name is George (pretend name). He is a grade 6 student with a Learning Disability in the area of Expressive Language. George loves math, science, and trivia. His main challenge is spelling. He has difficulty with blends, diagraphs, and word families, so his writing is sometimes very difficult to read. Because he has difficulty with these concepts, George has trouble decoding words, so he has difficulty with reading fluency, as well. He also has challenges remembering his multiplication and division facts.

George sometimes gets frustrated to the point of shutting down and not doing any work at all. He requires short breaks throughout his work time to prevent this.

The apps that I chose for George are:

1) TextTumble: This app is like Scrabble meets Tetris! You use the falling letters to make words, and you can blast letters away if you need to! I chose this app for George because he has difficulty spelling words, and this app provides him a fun way to practice spelling! There is a video describing how to play this app below.

2) The next app I chose is Beat the Tiki. I chose this app for George because he likes games, and this game is addictive! This could be used during a break from work. This video explains it very well:

3) The third app I chose is called Math Races. I chose this app because it is a fun way for George to practice his math facts. This video demonstrates how the game is played:
